This edition is based on version of this treatise published in 1882 within the volume "Seneca's Morals: Of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency," based on the Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704) translation.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4 BC – 65 AD) was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman and dramatist. Seneca was a tutor and advisor to the Roman emperor Nero and is widely considered one of the most influential Stoic philosophers. His works on Stoic philosophy and ethics have been read for centuries, and his influence on the development of Western thought is undeniable. Seneca was born in Corduba, in the Roman province of Hispania, to a wealthy Roman family. He studied rhetoric and philosophy in Rome, and eventually became a teacher and advisor to Nero, who held him in high esteem. He was exiled to Corsica in 65 AD for alleged involvement in a conspiracy against Nero. While in exile, he wrote extensively, including works on Stoic philosophy, ethics and natural science.
